St. Aegidien Church with tombstone of Doctor Eisenbart

Short facts

  • Hann. Münden

The resting place of Doctor Eisenbart.

The main part of St. Aegidien Church was destroyed in 1626 by the explosion of a powder keg in a neighbouring building. Reconstruction, however, was not completed until 1733. Doctor Eisenbart was buried in a crypt in the chancel in the middle of the altar in 1727. His baroque gravestone - with an incorrect year of birth - was erected on the north side of the church in 1837.

The St. Aegidienkirche was deconsecrated in 2006, due to financial problems and the ever-shrinking church congregation. In 2008, Bernd Demandt, owner of the hotel opposite, was able to purchase the church from the city and rebuild it.

At the end of 2018, committed Christians from the region were offered the surprising opportunity to combine the situation of an "either-or" (either only "church" or only "café") to a "both-and" (church & café). Pfinsten 2019, an ecclesiastical foundation was established with the aim of spiritually revitalising this place, preserving the building according to its original purpose and creating a place of encounter.

The St. Aegidien Church Foundation would like to contribute to making faith and enjoyment, praying and encountering, praising God and hospitality, church and café a unity at this historic place.
