frauenORT Hann. Münden

Duchess Elisabeth - Regent | Reformer | Counsellor

On the initiative of the Landesfrauenrat Niedersachsen e.V. (Lower Saxony State Women's Council), Hann. Münden has been the 13th women's place with Duchess Elisabeth since 2011. She was born in Cölln (Spree) in 1510 and died in Ilmenau in 1558. Regent, reformer and advisor - these three attributes characterise the work of Duchess Elisabeth. From the Guelph castle in Münden, the wife of Duke Erich I of Brunswick-Lüneburg led the guardianship government for her minor son after his death. She reformed the court administration as well as the poor and court system and in 1542 was the first and probably the only known woman in the 16th century to introduce the teachings of Martin Luther in the principality. In a government textbook, she warned her son against wasting money and expensive wars. In addition to hymns and prayers, she also wrote a marriage book for her daughter and a comfort book for widows.

The women's place Herzogin Elisabeth in Hann. Münden was created in cooperation with the municipal equal opportunities commissioner and the Lutheran city church congregation and was opened in May 2011.
