Spielplatz Am Wall Hann. Münden

Today we are visiting the Weserbergland. At the Weserstein, the Werra and the Fulda flow together and henceforth share a name - or so it says in bumpy verse on said stone. It is not only because of this sight that a trip to Hann. Münden is also worthwhile for families! The picture-perfect half-timbered town is part of the Fairytale Route and the centre of the Hann. Münden adventure region. During our #cities4family visit, we found out what awaits big and small children and their parents here.

Accommodation in Hann. Münden for families

The best type of accommodation in Hann. Münden for families is, of course, in one of the beautiful half-timbered houses. Within the old town there are several hotels and also a number of holiday flats.

We move into the cute holiday home on the Wall. It is tiny, but beautiful! Three floors are connected by steep stairs. There are no stair gates, so the accommodation is not really ideal for small children. Nevertheless, we feel right at home in the nested little house. Everything is within walking distance and we are right in the middle of half-timbered heaven.

Fairytale tour of Hann. Münden

As we approach the magnificent town hall early on Sunday morning, it is immediately clear to us that we are in fairytale land. A market woman in a bonnet and handcart and a cheeky lad are waiting for us in the sun. They fit perfectly into the scenery that surrounds us at the market place. As we greet them, it becomes clear that they are actually two Hann. Münden tour guides. They usually guide school classes and other children's groups through Hann. Münden. On certain dates, however, there are also public tours for families in Hann. Münden. After the formalities, we slip seamlessly back into the fairytale world. The Brave Little Tailor buys a jar of plum jam from the market woman and shortly afterwards kills seven flies in one fell swoop. We are right in the middle of the story. And in the next ones as well, because "Seven at one stroke" is also the motto of the tour. Again and again we are asked for our opinion, are allowed to guess and sometimes even play along. We wander through the old town and have breakfast at the same time, taking in the most important sights. The two guides effortlessly change into and out of their fairy tale roles, just as the situation requires. They cast a spell over us with their play. All of us, mind you: even the teenagers, who are hard to motivate at the moment, are thrilled. Little Franka prefers to snuggle up in the safety of her mum's arm at first, but later she guards the Golden Goose feather like a treasure. If you like fairy tales - or want to get to know some - the fairy tale tour of Hann. Münden is the right place for you!

Excursion tip for families in Hann. Münden with children: Sababurg Zoo

Families should take a full day to explore the small half-timbered town and the immediate surroundings. After that, a trip to Sababurg is definitely worthwhile. Germany's oldest zoo awaits you here, celebrating its 450th anniversary this year. And it is also one of Europe's largest wildlife parks. Of course, the Sababurg Zoo is not (only) worth seeing because of these superlatives. Above all, it is the tranquil atmosphere that prevails in the extensive grounds. The hustle and bustle is concentrated in the front area of the "children's zoo". This is where the animal stars live, who are extremely popular with the younger visitors. Besides the petting goats, there are the raccoons, for example. Children and bears approach the glass pane curiously from both sides. At the back, the park becomes more of a wonderful walking area with animal encounters. Partly along wooden boardwalks, you can see various domestic and international game species. With a view of moose and reindeer, we could get pizza, ice cream or cake in the Swedish coffee stuga. Instead, we try the SabaBurger at the kiosk in the entrance area. With local wild boar, pear puree and camembert, it's a truly delicious fast food option!  This is also a great way to spend a full family day at Sababurg Zoo. If you still have time at the end, take a detour to the Sababurg, which gives its name to the park and is considered Sleeping Beauty's castle. The primeval forest in the Reinhardswald - Hesse's oldest nature reserve - is also right next door.

Playground tip: Wallanlagen

Families will find a beautiful, spacious playground in Hann. Münden in the Wallanlagen. It is only a few minutes' walk from the town centre along Markt- and Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Strasse into the countryside. The area offers both small and older children plenty of opportunities to climb and let off steam. The highlight for our youngest playground fans is the giant slide down the entire hill. Several picnic areas are also available.

The green side: hiking in the Weserbergland region

Hann. Münden lies in the middle of the forest, so to speak. This is where the Weserbergland Trail begins, which runs 225 kilometres to Porta Westfalica. A more straightforward hike for families in Hann. Münden is the ascent to the Tillyschanze. It also starts at the Weserstein and then leads over the narrow footbridge up to the lookout tower and restaurant.

If you want to take it easy or have little time, you can also get a nice panoramic view at the Weserliedanlage. It is located northwest of the old town directly above the "Weserkuss". You can almost drive up here by car and just "walk" the last few hundred metres to the vantage point.

Extra tip: Find the unicorn!

With all the magical experiences inside and outside the city walls: The most beautiful thing about Hann. Münden is and remains the town itself, even for families. For us, at least, strolling along the colourful half-timbered houses with their ornate beams and front doors is simply fun. There is also so much to discover! A special feature of Hann. Münden's half-timbered houses is the narwhal motif. In the Middle Ages, the tusks of marine mammals were thought to be the headdress of unicorns. In the Renaissance - the period from which the half-timbered houses date - knowledge of the actual origin of the mystical relics prevailed. It is not known exactly why facades with decorative narwhal motifs are more abundant in Hann. Münden than in any other town. Spotting them is a nice task on a family walk through Hann. Münden. And there is also a "real" unicorn! It adorns what is perhaps the most beautiful half-timbered house in the town. Who can find it?

Hann. Münden for families: our conclusion

Our short trip to the fairytale town and its magically beautiful surroundings was simply fantastic! Only too short. We will definitely be back again!
